If you thought that science fiction stories can’t be funny it is high time you dive into the world of CD Warhurst. His latest novel The Planet Baggers is one of the most amusing and entertaining books I have ever read.
The Planet Baggers has the most improbable antihero as its protagonist: Colin, a single man who has left the hectic city life behind him and likes nothing better than working in his garden. With his hands full of nettles, Colin suddenly stands face to face with extra-terrestrials, who invite him into their fully equipped spacecraft. Before he realizes what happens they take him along with a dizzying speed and the reader enters a literary roller coaster far beyond the grasp of earthly logic.
Colin turns out not to be the only abducted human being on board. With clever refinement, the aliens have brought him a suitable other half: Kayleigh, a former pin-up model, who in a former life adorned Colin’s adolescent bedroom wall as an unreachable girl. Their worlds seem to be far apart, but in the timeless and placeless dimensions of The Planet Baggers everything has become relative.
CD Warhurst wrote a page turner that you only need to put down because you have to laugh so loud. Warhurst’s humour is dry and full of self-mockery, occasionally he even steps into his own story as an omniscient narrator. Those who have a weakness for Warhurst’s tongue-in-cheek style will not get bored for a second while reading. CD Warhurst writes as if he is Roald Dahl and JK Rowling’s love child. If Netflix, Disney Plus and Video Land are smart, they immediately buy the rights to this fascinating book, because this story will work very well on any screen. For those who can’t get enough of Colin and Kayleigh’s hilarious adventures: part two is on its way!
