Words fall short these days; you just hit the wrong key in everything you say. Hence my choice for instrumental music. Brad Mehldau often touches me with his own compositions, with his Bach arrangements, but also with his interpretations of meaningful pop songs. Just before the theaters closed, the American pianist and his trio gave a beautiful concert at TivoliVredenburg in Utrecht, the Netherlands. Mehldau has a special affinity with Nick Drake’s music and songs by Lennon and McCartney. If I had to choose a piece, I would go for ‘Exit Music (For A Film)’. Radiohead composed this song for a film adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. A play that shows us that love is stronger than death. Brad Mehldau’s rendition is featured on The Art Of The Trio, Volume Three. When I first saw and heard Brad Mehldau’s trio at North Sea Jazz they played this tune and I knew that music would never be the same again.
